AG Gallery is pleased to announce Haejin Park’s first solo exhibition “ORANGE IN A CORNER”, opening on September 16, 2017. Please be invited for the opening reception on Saturday, September 16, and meet the artist.

Haejin Park is a New York based artist and illustrator. Please be invited for the opening reception and meet the artist on Saturday, September 16 evening. Haejin graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with BFA in Illustration, and since then she has been working as an illustrator based in New York City. Her clients include New York Times, BuzzFeed, PLANSPONSOR, Portland Mercury, edible Manhattan, and more. She has received awards from 3×3, Society of Illustrators, Association of Illustrators. She also enjoys writing zines and making small books. She has been traveling and selling those zines and books at following events ; Rhode Island Expo, Comic Art Chicago, Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Museum of Comic Arts.

If you knew even a little bit about her work, that means also you have met unique characters living in her work. Those characters (such as Mushroom Dancer, Toilet Princess, and Worm Players, and more…) are like signs that take you to her original stories and imaginary fairly tales. Her academic background is Illustration, however, larger scale paintings, drawings, and sculptures that she has kept making in her personal time are as powerful as her illustration with vivid colors and cheerful energy, only they are bigger and we can feel her imagination, joy of creation, and freedom. This will be the first opportunity that we can enjoy a collection of Haejin Park’s personal works.

Artist Statement
Two girls live in my room.
One is a five years old, she is quiet and decisive, sitting on a center.
And an older girl in a corner. She is sick and red, always desiring manic feelings.
I work like constantly switching back and forth between them.

I start by creating characters such as Worm Players, Big Headed Boy, Mushroom Dancer, Toilet Princess. After tilting them, I get excited to add a story and fill out the surroundings. With an illustration background, my process is like writing a short story.
I use watercolor as my main medium, as I think it is innocent and honest.
Recently, I started to make them into a fun toy using air dry clay and paper mache.   
Orange In A Corner is my first solo exhibition. It will show my recent personal works, featuring original watercolor paintings, drawings, zines, and sculptures.

AG Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition with artist Rica TASAKA “Embroidered NY”, openng on August 18, 2017.

Rica TASAKA is a Japanese artist who explores washi as an art medium like oil paints and clay. Tasaka’s works are made completely with only embroider and Washi-paper collage. Tasaka collects images from around the world. Based on snapshots pictures she shot in cities she visited she creates her washi-art. Tasaka explores everyday subjects in her work that make us rediscover joys and happiness that lives in small parts of our daily life in a specific location of the world.

In this exhibition Tasaka created NYC landscape series using pictures and sketches of her visit to NYC last year as inspirations. We suggest gallery visitors to get extra closer to artworks this time, and see the details. They look like illustrations at a first sight but actually collaged paper and stitchings that make those “snapshot-like” pictures.

Exhibition is on view through August 24th, 2017. Please visit the gallery and enjoy how NYC was like to a visiting artist, you may discover something similar or different from what you know.

Statement and Message from Artist

 I was born and raised in the bustling, food-centered city of Osaka, Japan in 1974.
 I spent my childhood creating unique works of art using everyday items I found around the house. Later in life, I entered the Life Design Department at the Kyoto Saga University of Arts.
 While at the university, I designed furniture and various other household goods. After graduating in 1995, I worked at a company as an interior designer.
 During that time I started working on my own art and in the process found traditional Japanese washi paper which totally changed my work. Washi paper has special textures that I can’t express using just paint. The texture and the hand-torn edges of the paper absorb and dissipate the ink in a way that makes each piece unique. I also embroider directly on the washi paper to give my work a three-dimensional texture and a visual rhythm as a single piece of art based on everyday life.
 I resigned from my company in 2000 and became a freelance illustrator. I did illustrations in various media, as I actively worked on creating solo exhibitions. In 2015, I held my first public exhibition at the Karuizawa New Art Museum in Nagano. Then I had my first exhibit in Brooklyn, New York.

 Coming to New York in 2017, greatly expanded my experience and style. The overwhelming energy of the city exhibited in its food, people, and lively culture caused me to explore a sense of movement and irregularity in my art. This has added power in addition to the sense of healing which was present in my previous work.

 I hope that whoever sees my art feels like they have made a small discovery in their lives and it causes them to smile. That’s what keeps me going as an artist.

3 Month Internship (Unpaid)

Description
AG Gallery specializes in pop-art and contemporary fine art from local and international artists, and the gallery is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn since 2003. The gallery is seeking an intern to work on a part-time basis (1-2 days per week) to provide general administrative support to the gallery director. Additionally it is mandatory to be present on gallery exhibition opening night to support the smooth operation.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to: Scanning and general archive work, cataloging, data entry, research, record keeping; distributing flyers; helping designing of flyer and other advertising materials; writing blog posts; assisting with the various tasks associated with mounting exhibitions and displaying art pieces; greeting and conversing with gallery visitors.

This internship will provide an excellent opportunity to work in a commercial art gallery, with a variety of responsibilities. The ideal candidate must take initiative and be able to multitask. Past gallery experience is not required, however, some experience in taking digital photography and decent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe (Photoshop and Illustrator) is expected. Ability to be able to work on site is required.

What is ART in BOXES?
“ART in BOXES” is a large group exhibition which shows/sells one of a kind artworks for ideas of the holiday gifts at affordable prices. AG Gallery exhibits about a hundred of art pieces every year by more than 30 artists from all over the world. The curator selected small to large art pieces which would be great for the holiday gifts. Artworks that are included in this show are paintings, sculptures, prints, collages, artist books, ceramics, potteries, greeting cards and postcards, accessory and jewels and many more handmade pieces. This is the great opportunity for that if people are looking for extraordinary holiday gifts this year or would like to give something special to someone special.

Q1- Please tell us a little bit about your background…

I first started making little plush toys for friends when I was studying at university. My interest in textiles grew from there and I began experimenting with embroidery and 3D felt techniques. I am now a full-time practicing textile artist, based in Melbourne, Australia. I make plush sculptural works of my imagined characters and the worlds they might live in. I also make books for Children and other fantastical artworks with my collaborator and good pal Isobel Knowles under the name Soft Stories.

Q2 -What was the first work of art that you saw or experienced that you still remember today? 

I grew up in Tasmania, in a very small country town. Every week, my Mum used to take us to the Launceston Museum and I remember just staring for ages at the detailed dioramas of prehistoric animal habitats and dinosaur bones.

Q3 -Who were your earliest influencers of famous artists or creators? 

Richard Scarry and Beatrix Potter have definitely been my longest serving inspirations! I have many old, battered copies of their books from my childhood that I refer back to over and over again. Their ability to create not only beautiful characters, but worlds for their characters to exist in, is something I strive for myself.

 

 

 

Q4 – Please tell us about your work… What do you make?

I make soft sculptures of my imagined characters using needle felt and 3D felting techniques.

Q5 -What generally inspires or influences you to create your work?

I like to devise new characters all the time! I get an idea in my head or sketch something out and am not satisfied until I work it up into a 3D character.

Q6 -What is the main challenge for you when creating your work? 

I like my work to engage a wide audience, so there are elements that appeal to young children and also an older generation. My main objective when creating new work for exhibition is to incite feelings of comfort, joy and nostalgia – when I make a piece that encapsulates all of these elements, I am satisfied with the work!

 

Q7 -What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a series of food related characters: a Croissant pâtissière, a Dango delivery person and a Egg headed egg farmer – I am increasingly fascinated by absurd characters made up of inanimate objects, like food, and I’m enjoying experimenting with new and weird themes.

Q8 -What is your dream or goal as an artist in 3 years? 5 years? 

I am addicted to sewing new things, so if I’m still able to do that, then I’ll be happy ^_^

Lastly, Do you have any message to visitors for this exhibition? 

Please enjoy these new characters that Philippa and I have made as part of the Strange Hearts Club! Online dating is a new world of crazy possibility that really fascinates me, and I wanted to explore what my characters would look like if they were plunged in to this world!
