“Why do I make dolls? Why dolls?
For children, a doll is one of toys. For adults, however, a doll could be something adorable and a source of comfort. The handmade dolls are my language to express my inner self that I have always wanted to express, but I could not in words.
Sometimes the final work comes out quite different from the original idea, but they are always the honest expression of my feelings. By creating a doll, I learn about myself a little more than before, and that can be frightening but also it is exhilarating.
When I am making dolls, I feel relaxed and completely lose track of time. The process of making a doll, or to give a shape to something that is not there yet, could be painful, but when it finally finished, it makes me calm and feel peaceful.
The dolls are like the small versions of myself, only more straightforward to my heart. If you were moved or felt something by those dolls, it is my great pleasure,”-S. Shinke

ABOUT ARTIST

A graduate of the China Academy of Art, Chen Dongfan works primarily in painting but has also employed installation and video, along with other formats. Chen takes colour itself to reflect adroitly on issues of form and as a means of finding balance amid disorder. In the artist’s opinion, the work exists organically as a means via which both to explore and to describe things themselves indeterminate. Here the artist’s relationship to the work is not one merely of expression, but rather to engage himself more as a medium, the work and to scrutinize one another and working together in mutual refinement.

KENTARO HORIUCHI -Now On View-

Raised in Osaka, Japanese artist Kentaro Horiuchi’s works are vivid and bold. His brightly colored creations seem to exist on another plane, pouring onto the canvas from deep within the artist’s own stream of consciousness. Each piece has painstaking, minute details, and yet when all combined together creates an image that is larger than life.

While sporadic as they may seem, Horiuchi has an excellent command of color and design. The vibrant colors used by the artist create a cerebral, even psychedelic landscape for the viewer to explore. By gazing into these works of art, you too can be transported to Horiuchi’s world.

His works are on view at AG Gallery through ending of March, 2015. To learn more about Kentaro Horiuchi please visit his website at https://sites.google.com/site/khterritory/
