OLD WIVES’ LIES
September 12 – November 3, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, September 13 | 6 – 9 PM | Williamsburg Every 2:ND Friday
“Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations.”
— L. Frank Baum, creator of the Oz books, 1900
This show focuses on works inspired by the artists’ childhood relationship with folklore—from the traditional to the obscure and the contemporary, all that mattered most regardless of its “cultural” merit—and specifically the misinformation, neuroses and habits these artists have as a result of that relationship, and may still be accepting or overcoming into adulthood. The show investigates a diverse selection of personal mythology by a group of more than 30 artists working in techniques including painting, drawing, sculpture and Vine video.
Curated by Hazel Lee Santino
We open 7 days a week during show period, Noon – 8ish.
