SUMMER EXHIBITION SERIES 2011
RYO MIKAMI SOLO EXHIBITION
August 12 – 17, 2011
AG Gallery is pleased to present “SAMPLING PROCESS”, the solo exhibition of Ryo Mikami. “SAMPLING PROCESS” featured live performance, using a Japanese comic and try to capture a true figure of sub consciousness.
Mikami chooses Japanese comics to capture subconscious by cutting and digging down according to outline of each frame of comics. He creates a silent and calm world that is closely overlapping of comics at the micro level.
“In this work, I am literally “cutting frames”, which makes it no longer possible for readers to follow the story, and allows them to only see some meaningless pieces of drawings. In the limited objects to see, however, they may see struggles and personalities of the author, which appears when wondering how to make frames, especially in the pattern made by an “accident” of being put together after being cut into pieces. The pattern presents the subconscious of the author of the comic, subconscious of myself who cut them into pieces, and subconscious of viewers of the work. For example, musicians who improve music may make and stick to certain rules in order for them to create music without interruption of their playing habits and emotions. I tried the idea in “SAMPLING PROCESS”.” – Ryo Mikami
